Sivagangai

     The Kingdom of Ramnad originally comprised of the territories of Ramnad, Sivaganga and Pudukottai of today.  Regunatha Sethupathy alias Kilavan Sethupathi, the 7th King of Ramnad reigned between 1674 and 1740. Kilvan Sethupathy, came to know of the bravery and valour of Peria Oodaya Thevar of  Nalukottai, 4 Kilometers from Sholapuram near Sivaganga. Sivagangai is the land of marudhu Pandyas who opposed the colonial power with patriotic fervor.  They were a nightmare to the British who in the guise of traders grabbed the whole of India and founded an empire here.  Had there been many Marudhus, the history of India would have been different from what it turned out to be. Sivagangai is now the headquarters of the district.  It was formed out of Ramanathapuram as a separate district in 1985. Sivagangai is a town in Tamil Nadu state of southern India.  It is the administrative headquarters of Sivaganga District. Karaikudi is the biggest City in Sivaganga district.  Known as the capital of Chettinad, because of the predominance of the ‘Nattu Kottai Chettiars’ who have from here have ventured far and wide to set up their business even at the turn of the 20th century.  The Chettiars were a prosperous banking community who ventured overseas to do business in South and Southeast Asia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is bounded on the north and northeast by Pudukkottai District, on the southeast and south by Ramanathapuram District, on the southwest by Virudhunagar District, and on the west by Madurai District, and on the Northwest by Tiruchirappalli.

Devakottai    

Devakottai is a town and municipality in Sivaganga district.  Devakottai is one of the most popular and biggest cities of the nagarathar community.  Devakottai is also famous for Nagarathar temples and bungalows.  In Devekottai there are two colleges, Sevugan Annamalai Art College and Ananda College, run by the R.C. Diocese of Sivagangai. There are also three women’s higher secondary schools and one boy’s higher secondary school.  There is also one co-ed higher secondary school.  In the education field most of schools are maintained by the Christian trusts, and two by Narathar ones.  In Silambani Oorani is located heart of the town.  In which temple Vinayagar in his leg ornament of Silambu.  There are 3 Mosques are situated in Devakottai because of the quiet Muslim population.

Karaikudi

     Karaikudi is 41 km from Sivagangai.  This small town is known for its magnificent mansions constructed by the Chettiars – a caste known as much for their prosperity as well as their hospitality.  Though the owners of these palatial wonders have long scattered, having left for distant shore, the beautifully carved wood work as well as the stone and mortar work of these houses can still be appreciated.  Comprising about 72 villages of which many of them were once the homes of wealthy merchant families known as the Chettiars.  Today, it is an area of mostly deserted splendid mansions.  The place derives its name from the famous plant “Karai” which abounds in the area.  The Alagappa College founded by the late Dr Alagappa Cherriar has been upgraded now as a deemed University and is known as Alagappa University.
